US Air Force Academy (USAFA)

US Air Force AcademyUSAFA or Air Force is a certified college for the undergraduate education of officer candidates for the United States Air Force (USAF). It is situated in EI Paso County, Colorado, United States. USAFA was established in 1954 and its nickname is Fighting Falcons. The mascot of United States Air Force Academy is the Bird. For Admission in the academy –

  1. Applicants are judged on their character, athletics, demonstrated leadership and academic achievement.
  2. Candidate must be a citizen of the United States and must be unmarried with no dependant.
  3. They must undergo a through medical examination and must pass a fitness test.
  4. They must also obtain a nomination, which generally comes from the congressman.

The Student of the United States Air Force Academy is called as cadets, while the student body is known as the Cadet Wing. Cadets are divided into four classes based on their year in academy: fourth-class, third-class, second-class, first-class cadets. Fourth-class cadets are referred as ‘doolies’, which means servant or slave. Members of the fourth-, third- and second- class are also referred as 4-degrees, 3-degrees, 2-degrees, respectively, while the first-class cadets are called as ‘firsties’. The student body is divided into 4-groups of ten cadet squadrons, which consists of about 110 students each.
The academic program of USAFA has an extensive core curriculum, in which all cadets take mandatory courses in the physical education, military studies, humanities, social sciences, engineering and sciences. The academic program also grants a Bachelor of Science degree, and most of the graduates are commissioned as Second Lieutenant (2d LT) in the USAF. This program is based on four pillars of excellence: character development, athletics, academics and military training. Tuitions for cadets are fully funded by the United States Government.
All cadets are expected to participate in either intramural or intercollegiate athletics. Two athletic fitness tests are –

  1. Physical Fitness Test (PFT) – PFT consists of five events (all done in a 15-minute time frame): 600 yard sprint, push-ups, sit-ups, standing long jump and pull-ups.
  2. Aerobic Fitness Test (AFT) – AFT consists of a timed 2.4 km (1.5 mile) run.

The United States Air Force Academy mission is “to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation."
