United States Coast Guard Training Center Cape May is the only enlisted recruit training center and accession point of the United States Coast Guard (USCG). This center is located on 1 Munro Avenue, Cape May, New Jersey. Basic training is tough and you will be challenged every day, both physically and mentally. Training procedure is –
Stepping off the Bus
- Initial days will be spent getting haircuts, filling out forms, receiving uniforms, learning your way round and getting oriented.
- You will meet your company commander (CC). She or he will be your guide, coach, leader, instructor and mentor.
- CC will teach you how to obey orders and self-discipline.
Physical Fitness
You will need to complete these physical fitness tests –
- For Men
- Jump off a 5-foot platform and swim 100 meters.
- Tread water for five minutes.
- Complete a swim circuit.
- Sit and Reach 16.50’’.
- Run 1.5 miles in under 12 minutes 51 seconds.
- 38 sit-ups in 60 seconds.
- 29 push-ups in 60 seconds.
- For Women
- Jump off a 5-foot platform and swim 100 meters.
- Tread water for five minutes.
- Complete a swim circuit.
- Sit and Reach 19.29’’.
- Run 1.5 miles in under 15 minutes 26 seconds.
- 32 sit-ups in 60 seconds.
- 15 push-ups in 60 seconds.
Academic Program
- It is designed to provide you with a basic orientation to the knowledge and skills, which you will need to succeed as a seaman beginner in the field.
- You will learn to handle small arms, survival equipment and heavy lines.
- You will receive training in everything from fire extinguishing methods to addressing military personnel, from the Coast Guard history to Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Practical Training
- You will attend classes on small arms safety and nomenclature.
- You will learn the basic pistol firing course.
- You will participate in a variety of practical instructions including damage control, fire fighting, seamanship and small arms training.
Boot Camp
- In fourth week, you will complete a dream sheet or an assignment data card.
- In dream sheet, you will be asked to request a geographical location for your first assignment.
- You will be also required to write the type of unit in which you wish to serve.
- At the end of the fifth week, you will receive your first assignment orders.
- These assignments are made to ashore and afloat units.
When you graduate, you will be ready to serve, and you will be proud of yourself.
