US Navy Technologies and Equipments

US Naval TechnologyWide variety of modern equipments and latest technologies are developed as well as used by the United States Navy. Most of their equipments use abbreviations and are categorized in weapons, ammunition and reactors.

Weapons:

  • The M61 Vulcan is six-barreled, electronically fired cannon which is air-cooled and pneumatically driven. It fires 20 mm extreme high rate rounds.
  • FN M3P is a fixed remote firing version with a flexible M3M machine gun has been adopted. M3P is being currently used and has replaced the XM296.50 cal and M2 machine gun.
  • The mini-gun is a multi-barrel 7.62 mm high fire rate machine gun. This gun fires approx 6,000 rounds per minute with an external power source.
  • The M240, 7.62mm machine gun, which is extensively used by infantry, watercraft, ground vehicles and aircrafts. M240 is regarded as reliable since 1980’s.
  • M4 carbine is a three round burst, semi-automatic and with selective fire feature. It is lighter and shorter version of assault rifle.

Ammunition:

  • CBU87 is a cluster bomb which when dropped, the bomb splits into separate smaller bombs covering larger area for effective explosion. This bomb targets multiple destinations at a single time, mostly hitting outer perimeter of the targeted area.
  • The Gator mine system is an anti-personal mine with existing cluster dispensers. They have two dispenser system The Navy 500 lb and Air Force 1,000 lb. They are normally used with volcano mine system.
  • Sensor Fuzed WeaponCBU97 is a 450 kg bomb that contains tactical munitions containing BLU108.
  • Cluster bomb CBU100 are weighted 490 pounds and are used against armored vehicles.

B61 is weighted 320 kg and it is considered a hardened penetration bomb containing uranium and other sources.

Reactors:
US Naval Rector is used by the Navy to aboard certain ships to produce electric power, propulsion and other uses. Naval nuclear reactors have power plant associated along with them. There are no non-nuclear submarines since the last conventional carrier.

A Submarine is an independent watercraft operating below the surface of water.
