US Army Equipments

Army EquipmentThe Equipment of the United States Army can be subdivided into three categories – Ammunition, Weapons and Vehicles.

Ammunition

Ammunition or Munition would include mines, missiles, bombs, and bullets.

  • 9x19mm NATO – It is used in M9 Pistol. The effective range of 9mm is about 100m, although the bullet is leather at longer ranges.
  • 5.56x45mm NATO – It is used in M249 Light Machine Gun, M16 rifle, M4 Carbine, and M231 FPW. This cartridge has a maximum effective range of 550 meters.
  • 7.62x51mm NATO – This cartridge is used in M24 Sniper Weapon System, M110 Sniper Rifle, M240 Medium Machine Gun, and M14 Rifle. The effective range of this cartridge is about 800 meters.
  • 12.7x99mm NATO – The 12.7x99mm NATO or .50 Browning Machine Gun is used in McMillan TAC-50, Barrett M82 and M2 Heavy Machine Gun. It is able to deliver accurate shot placement at ranges over 910 meters.
  • 12 gauge – This type of bullet is mostly used in shotguns like Benelli M4 Super 90 and Mossberg 500. It is very effective when the target is within the range of 40 meters.
  • 25x137mm NATO – It is used in M242 Chain Gun. The effective range of 25mm caliber is 3,000 meters, while the maximum range is 6,800 meters.
  • 30x113mm NATO – The 30mm caliber is used in M230 Chain Gun. The maximum range of the bullet is 4,500 meters with an effective range of 1,500 meters.
  • M67 Grenade – It is a fragmentation hand grenade, which is used by the United States. The weight of the grenade is 14 oz and length is 3.53 in. It has a 4.0 to 5.5 second fuze that ignites explosive packed inside a round body.
  • M18 Smoke Grenade – It is a canister-type non-lethal grenade, which is used to create smoke screens or to signal aircraft.
  • MK 19 Grenade Launcher – It is a 40 mm belt-fed automatic grenade machine gun or grenade launcher. The effective range is about 1500 yards, while the maximum range is 2,212 yards.

Weapons
It can be sorted into three categories –

  • Personal Weapons
    • M9 Pistol, a semi-automated handgun with a 15-round detachable magazine.
    • M16 Rifle, an assault rifle firing at a range of 825 rounds per minutes.
    • M4 Carbine, identical to the M16 rifle.
    • M14, a battle rifle used as Designated marksman rifle.
    • M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, a belt-fed light machine gun firing at a range from 750 to 1000 rounds per minute.
    • M24 Sniper Weapon System, a bolt-action sniper rifle.
    • M203 grenade launcher, a 40mm grenade launcher that can be attached under the barrel of a variety of rifles.
  • Support Weapons
    • M240 Medium Machine Gun, a belt-fed machine gun that has three rate-of-fire settings: 950, 850 and 750 rounds per minute.
    • M2 Heavy Machine Gun, a belt-fed machine gun that fires 12.7x99mm munition with a firing rate of 575 rounds per minute.
    • AT4, a light anti-tank weapon.
    • FIM-92 Stinger, an anti-aircraft missile.
    • BGM-71 TOW, the second generation wire guided anti-tank missile.
    • M224 mortar, capable of firing 60mm shells up to 3460 meters.
    • M120 mortar, capable of firing 120mm shells up to 7240 meters.
  • Vehicle Mounted Weapons
    • M2 Heavy and M240 MK 19 machine guns can be mounted on vehicles.
    • M242 Autocannon, is one of the primary armaments of the M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
    • M230 Autocannon, is mounted on the Black Hawk Direct Action Penetrator, VH-60 and AH-64 Apache helicopters.

Vehicles

  • High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (Humvee or HMMWV) – It is a 4WD motor military vehicle created by AM General. The weight of the vehicle is 5,200 lb to 5,900 lb.
  • Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) – It is a series of vehicles manufactured by BAE Systems Land and Arnaments, and has a capacity of five tons.
  • Heavy Equipment Transport System (HETS) - It is a military logistics vehicle, which is used to evacuate, deploy, and transport self-propelled artillery, armored personnel carriers, tanks, and other heavy vehicles.
  • M113 – It is a fully tracked armored personnel carrier that has formed the backbone of the U.S. Army’s  merchanized infantry units. The weight of the vehicle is 12.3 tones.
  • M1 Abrams – M1 Abrams is a third generation main battle tank produced in the United States. It was used in ‘War in Afghanistan’, ‘Iraq War’ and ‘Gulf War’.
  • Bradley Fighting Vehicle – It is an American fighting vehicle platform, which was manufactured by BAE Systems Land and Arnaments. The weight of the vehicle is 27.6 tones.
  • M88 Recovery Vehicle – It is one of the largest all weather Armored Recovery Vehicles (ARV). It was used in the Iraq War, Gulf War, Vietnam War, Kosovo War and Arab-Israeli conflict.
  • High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) – It is a U.S. light multiple rocket launcher mounted on a truck, which carries six rockets or one Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile.
  • Stryker – The IAV Stryker is a family of eight-wheeled armored combat vehicles derived from the Canadian LAV III and produced by General Dynamics Land Systems. It is the first new armored vehicle since 1980s.
  • AN/TWQ-1 Avenger – AN/TWQ-1, the Avenger Air Defense System, is a missile system which provides mobile, short-range air defense protection for ground units against cruise missiles, helicopters, low-flying fixed-wing aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
  • MIM-104 Patriot – It is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, which is manufactured by the Raytheon Company of the United States. It uses an advanced aerial interceptor missile and high performance radar systems.
