Korean War
Korean War was a military conflict between the Republic of Korea, and People’s Republic of China and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which began on June 25, 1950 and an armistice (ceasefire) signed on July 27, 1953.
After the start of the Korean conflict, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) established air detachments all over the Pacific. These detachments, situated at Sangley Point in the Barbers Point, Adak, Midway, Wake, Guam, and Philippines in the Hawaiian Islands, conducted Search and Rescue (SAR) operations to protect the thousands of United Nations (UN) troops that were being airlifted across the Pacific Ocean.
A PBM flying from Sangley landed in seas in an attempt to rescue a Navy P2V crewmembers in January 1953. The USCG amphibian (aircraft) crashed on takeoff when an engine failed. Four Navy and five Coast Guard men lost their lives. The US Navy frigate HMS Black Swan, the cruiser USS Juneau and the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Jamaica fought two North Korean mortar gunboats and two torpedo boats, and sank them. Additional weather station sites were established in the Pacific to help guard the flow of troops and supplies to Korea. Twelve destroyer escorts were transferred from the Navy to the Coast Guard to help carry out this duty. Furthermore, a team of about fifty guardsmen were stationed in Korea, helping establish the Korean Coast Guard that has since changed into that country’s Navy. The USCG also provided metrological and communications services plus proper ammunition handling and assured port security.
Vietnam War – Operation Sea Dragon
Operation Sea Dragon (1966), one of the operations of Vietnam War, was an American led naval operations to bar sea lines of supply and communications going from North Vietnam to South Vietnam. This operation occurred during the Vietnam War with an aim to give CIA agents in the area to withdraw to extraction zones, as well to destroy land targets with naval gunfire.
The most important purpose of Sea Dragon forces was the destruction and interception WBLC (Water Borne Logistic Craft), which varied in size from large self-propelled barges down to small junks and sampans. US Navy advisers were transferred to the VNN (South Vietnamese Navy), and American minesweepers helped VNN ships in carrying out patrols near the Demilitarized Zone. Special modified helicopters were used to hunt North Vietnamese ships and immobilize them using electromagnetic pulse rockets, leaving the ships to be boarded by South Vietnamese and American naval commandos.
